Samsung has an AMOLED tablet – Galaxy Tab 7.7 but it seems we might see a new albeit slightly smaller variant in the Galaxy Tab range. OLED Display reports that Samsung’s display manufacturing arm, Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) has listed a 7-inch OLED panel on their site. Since this subsidiary manufactures display panels for Samsung Electronics’ mobile devices, we cannot rule out the possibility of a 7-inch AMOLED tablet.

On the specs front, the 7-inch AMOLED panel produced by SMD will feature a WSVGA resolution (1024×600), just like Samsung’s other 7-inch tablets. It will have a brightness of 400nits, which is 150nits more than Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7’s AMOLED display panel.

Samsung last year managed to develop a 7-inch AMOLED display and it seems its Mobile Display unit will up the ante by producing a new 7-inch AMOLED display with higher resolution. According to an article on Daum, Samsung Mobile Display will develop a display with a resolution of 1024×768 as compared to previous AMOLED’s resolution of 1024×600. Oled-Display also speculates Samsung could upgrade the display tech to Super AMOLED Plus.

Despite the possible upgrade don’t expect an AMOLED-equipped tablet anytime soon as Samsung had confirmed to not launch any tablet with AMOLED screen this year.

Samsung today announced that construction of its 5.5 generation line for AMOLED displays has been completed. As per the last quarter, Samsung Mobile Display holds a 99 percent market share of the AMOLED market and with the plant starting 2 months early, Samsung will be able to produce more AMOLED panels and thus maintain its leadership.

The production line is situated in Tangjeong, South Korea and will produce 1300x1500mm glass substrates, making it three times larger than the 4.5 generation line. The glass substrates will be used for smartphones and tablets.

As Samsung continues to invest more in AMOLED technology, the Korean giant has also promised to generate about 3,000 new jobs.

Many have craved for a Samsung tablet with AMOLED displays but it seems you’ll have to wait a little longer. At the earnings call earlier today, Samsung executive confirmed that there won’t be any tablets with AMOLED display from them this year.

The executive did not explicitly say that they’re working on it but the possibility cannot be ruled out since Samsung has already created a 7-inch AMOLED prototype. Maybe next year?

Samsung has etched up a bright future for OLED displays. Samsung Mobile Display’s Kim Seong-cheol recently showed off a 0.2mm flexible AMOLED display but confirmed that with the technology available currently, OLEDs can be produced with a 0.1mm thickness. Such display, Kim reckons can be used for television sets and the commercialisation could happen sometime in 2013 or 2014.

Additionally, Samsung is also developing a paper-thin OLED display that can be used for applications like newspapers or books. This paper-like display is expected to be mass produced by 2015.

SMD’s current OLED market share is close to 99 percent.
