UPDATE: Hwan Kim, vice-president of mobile communications has issued a new statement to Reuters which says, “we have not received significant customer feedback on any signal reduction issue for the Omnia II. Based on years of experience of designing high quality phones, Samsung mobile phones employ an internal antenna design technology that optimizes reception quality for any type of hand-grip use.”

Apple had a press conference last Friday that claimed iPhone 4 is not the only one that faces antenna issues. To support its claim, Steve Jobs demonstrated few mobile phones that dropped signal when held in the hand. One such device belonged to Samsung that is known as Omnia II.

Needless to say, Samsung isn’t too happy with it and have defended the device. Samsung’s spokesperson confirmed to Korea Herald saying they “have fully conducted field tests” and there are no reception problems and won’t be any in the future too.

The antenna is located at the bottom of the Omnia 2 phone, while iPhone’s antenna is on the lower left side of the device. Our design keeps the distance between a hand and an antenna. We have fully conducted field tests before the rollout of smartphones. Reception problems have not happened so far, and there is no room for such problems to happen in the future.”

Other companies like RIM, HTC whose phones were demonstrated have also issued some statement criticizing Apple’s claim.

UPDATE 2: Updated the post with specs and features of all the devices along with the prices for the Nordic region. Check below.

UPDATE: We’ve got specs of Wave 2, Wave 2 Pro and pictures of Omnia Pro 4 and Omnia Pro 5, courtesy of Engadget and Fonearena. Both phones support quad-band GSM with EDGE connectivity, 3.2-inch TFT LCD, TouchWiz UI, Social Hub, Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth 2.1, 3MP camera, A-GPS, 80MB internal memory and microSD card slot.

As expected, Samsung has introduced new phones on bada, Windows Mobile and Android platforms at CommunicAsia. Though we don’t have the full specs yet, the Wave 2 (S5250) and Wave 2 Pro (S5330) will be bada-powered and will mostly be priced lower than the original Wave. Both the phones will feature Wi-Fi, Social Hub and support for Samsung Apps application store.

Wave 2 (S5250) and Wave 2 Pro (S5330) will be available from August in Russia and Southeast Asia in black, white and pink colors.

Samsung has also introduced Omnia Pro 4 (B7350) and Omnia Pro 5 (B6520) devices based on Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. Omnia Pro 4 will be available from July in Europe, CIS and Southeast Asia whereas Omnia Pro 5 will go on sale from August in Southeast Asia, Middle East & Africa, India and Latin America.

Rounding up the Android offerings, Samsung also unveiled Galaxy 5 I5500 – which has already got official –, Galaxy Beam (I8520) and Galaxy 3 (I5800). The phone we thought was Beam turns out it is Galaxy 3 (I5800). The details here are slim again except the availability status.

Galaxy 3 and Galaxy 5 will start selling in European and Asian markets from July while Galaxy Beam will launch in July for Singapore customers.

Beam that was introduced at the MWC 2010 sports a 3.7-inch Super AMOLED screen, 8MP camera, HD video recording and an integrated pico projector.

While iPhone in South Korea has been enjoying decent sales (about 4,000 units everyday), KT, its official operator seems to be getting less attention from local players, particularly by Samsung. KT Chairman’s Lee Suk-chae is pretty unhappy about how Samsung is providing “lax technology support on handsets” on KT as well as announcing new phones on SK Telecom.

“The Show Omnia is an illegitimate son who can’t call his father, father,” said Lee and accused Samsung for under promoting the handset that managed to sell only 40,000 units as compared to SKT’s T-Omnia II’s 470,000 units. SHOW Omnia is the only Omnia handset that features 3G WCDMA, Wi-Fi and WiBro connectivity.

KT’s desperation also comes from the fact that Samsung will launch Galaxy A (SHW-M100S) this week on SKT whereas Galaxy S, unveiled at CTIA is also expected to be launched on the same operator in June.

Here is another reason for Omnia HD users to switch to custom firmware instead of the official one. Modder Andy or famously known as HyperX has created HX-V4-Speed-SE firmware that runs 62 apps at one time. Of course, there’s little reason for you to fire up every application in your phone like this one but this feat shows Omnia HD and custom ROM can make a good pair. The new firmware also has 194MB of free RAM at start up, which is about 11 times more than the startup RAM in the original firmware.

The firmware is not available for download yet but you can keep a track on HyperX’s blog.

Samsung has announced that its Omnia II smartphone has surpassed 600,000 units in South Korea. Unlike in the international market, Samsung sells different versions of Omnia II on different cellular operators like T*Omnia II (left) for SKT, SHOW Omnia (center) for KT and OZ Omnia (right) for LGT.

Samsung says Omnia II sales averaged about 100,000 units per month and the reason the phone is selling well is because users are satisfied with Omnia II’s performance and its after-sales service.

The common features found in all these phones are 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen display, 800MHz processor, 5MP camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

At the MIX developer conference yesterday, Microsoft was demoing its Windows Phone 7 Series where eagle-eyed viewers stumbled on this Samsung device. This unnamed device is a modified version of Symbian running Omnia HD and the only visible change is its center Windows button. We’re not sure if Samsung is eventually planning to sell this but if they do, the specs will definitely be upped as per Microsoft’s minimum spec requirement.
