Samsung is selling a limited edition SpongeBob Squarepants Corby phone in Hong Kong. The phone is same as the original S3650C but if bought by April 23, consumers can either get a Spongebob or his best friend Patrick Star’s battery cover set. The set includes two battery covers with the cartoon’s pictures on it, a mobile pouch and a Spongebob token.

Samsung has launched another Corby device in India, a CDMA variant of S3650. Dubbed as Corby Speed, it carries the same features as S3650 but is powered by Open Market Handset (OMH) tech, which means the CDMA phone can work with any of existing CDMA operators who support OMH SIM cards.

To reiterate, the phone has a 2.8-inch touchscreen display, SNS support, 2MP camera, 80MB internal memory, microSD card slot, music player, FM Radio and comes in three color options – White, Black and Yellow. It will sell for Rs. 10,400.

Corby Speed will also be sold on Tata Indicom with various data plans. Prepaid customers can recharge for as low as Rs. 28 and surf the web by paying per MB or postpaid customers can go for Corby 450 plan wherein they’ll get 512MB of free usage per month along with two months of trial usage of 10GB.

Samsung also introduced Mpower Muzik 219 and Duos 259, the former targeting music aficionados and the latter for dual-SIM users. Muzik 219 features a music player, FM Radio, VGA camera, Bluetooth, microSD card slot (up to 2GB) and dual speakers whereas Duos 259 integrates two SIM slots, one for GSM and one for CDMA and has 1.3MP camera, FM Radio, Bluetooth and microSD card slot (up to 8GB).

Both, Mpower Muzik 219 and Duos 259 are expected to arrive next month carrying a price tag of Rs. 3,599 and Rs. 8,350 respectively.

Samsung Corby is undoubtedly targeted at youth due to its jazzy colors. Now, Samsung is taking a step further by offering young Corby users to customize their phones with replaceable back covers and stickers. The stickers and covers can be replaced without any fuss and there are up to 50 different designs, which Samsung reckons suits every mood and style.

Rear panels and stickers will sell in Russia for 390 Rubles (US$13) and 360 Rubles (US$12) respectively.

Just like Corby (S3650) did to Star to strip the tag for cheapest touchscreen phone, it seems a new cheaper-than-Corby touch phone is on the horizon. Cellpassion has heard from a reliable source that Samsung will launch Corby Pop in India soon. Although it will carry mediocre specs, its USP will be the touchscreen display that will be offered on the cheap (approx. Rs. 7,000).

The feature set includes 1.3MP camera, FM Radio, 22MB internal memory, 960mAh battery life purportedly having an 8 hour battery life and will come pre-loaded with Palringo IM, fake call apps and different social widgets.

Just like Samsung integrated Wi-Fi for Star (S5230), the Korean giant is looking to repeat the same for its cheapest full-touch Corby device. The S3650 has got certified by Wi-Fi association which now bears the model no S3650W. Other features are expected to remain the same.

Colorful Corby has sold more than 3m units and features quad-band GSM/EDGE support, 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen display, TouchWiz UI, 2MP camera, FM Radio, Bluetooth, microSD card slot.

The release date is not known but if we were to guestimate, Corby Wi-Fi could come in January next year.

With plethora of touchscreen handsets available from Samsung, this milestone was somewhat expected. They’ve announced to sell its 50 millionth unit this month ensuring touchscreen handset market is where the volume (and money) is. The total figure is cumulative of 10m units from 2008 and 40m this year.

However, if we consider the growth percent-wise, Samsung’s this year full-touch phone shipments have increased by 4 times. Touchscreen phones accounted for a total of 5 percent sales in 2008 whereas this year it has contributed to the tune of 20 percent out of its projected 200m unit sales.

Samsung’s mammoth volume is obviously the result of affordable touchscreen phones like Star (S5230) that has sold more than 10m units in just six months of its launch and now its Corby (S3650) that has recorded sales of more than 3m units since its launch in September.

Europe leads the pack for Samsung with 19m units touchscreen phones followed by United States, China and South Korea recording sales of 6.3m, 3.4m and 3.0m respectively.

The Corby S3653 will come in dual tone diagonal contour designed phone with an emphasis on its social networking skills that gives instant access to Facebook, Twitter et al. It will sell for Rs. 9,600.

The phone better known as Corby (S3650) has hit the UK shores by the name of Genio Touch. Coming in variety of colors and refreshing dual-toned contoured design, the phone is aimed at the youth seeking a pocket friendly solution to access various social networking sites instantly.

Samsung is planning to launch one more phone with Corby’s dual tone diagonal contoured design. It’s the B3210 that bears the same Corby design but integrates a full QWERTY keyboard instead of the touchscreen display. Targeted at youth, the phone will come in variety of colors and features 2MP camera, 3.5mm headset jack, Bluetooth, FM Radio, IM/Email services and music player.

The price is unknown right now but it is expected to hover around Corby’s price.
