Samsung is now shipping its 12.5mm 2.5-inch 1 terabyte internal hard drive. The Spinpoint MT2 is said to be ideal to be fitted in portable hard drives, digital TVs, set-top box etc.

The Spinpoint MT2 uses 333GB per-platter tech and in addition to storing large amounts of data, the drive ensures better performance and reliability. The MT2 gives about 20% more read/write performance and 4% less power consumption when compared to the competition. Additionally, the drive has a shock resistance of 400G (2ms) during operation and 800G (1ms) when the drive is powered off.

The MT2 spins at 5400RPM and supports SATA 3.0Gbps interface, SilentSeek, NoiseGuard, 8MB buffer and Native Command Queuing.

The MT2 is also available in 750GB capacity.

Samsung will be adding a new storage capacity option to its Spinpoint M7 series. The 640GB HDD in a 2.5-inch form factor will boast an areal density of 516Gb (Gigabit) per square inch per platter, which is a 28 percent increase over Samsung’s 500GB M7 HDD.

With the increase in areal density, the need for adding extra platter is eliminated, thus increasing storage capacity and stability while reducing mechanical parts and power consumption.

The 5400RPM Spinpoint M7 supports 3Gbps SATA interface, 8MB cache memory and is equipped with SilentSeek and NoiseGuard to reduce noise levels and shock resistance of 400G and 900G under operation or powered off mode respectively.

Samsung will ship the drive in Europe and US starting mid-September for $150 while rest of the markets will get from late September.

Samsung has announced a new hard drive to cater to the 1.8-inch external HDD market. The Spinpoint N3U comes in capacities of up to 250GB and instead of adding a bridge circuit board to convert the PATA interface to USB, the new drives integrate the USB controller right on its printed circuit board.

With no conversion of interface, the N3U drives consume less power, give better performance and also reduce the chances of failure due to loose cable connections.

The Spinpoint N3U drives come in storage options of 120-, 160-, 200- and 250-GB, supports USB 2.0 interface, 3600RPM, 8MB cache memory and can withstand drops up to 50cm and shock incident up to 1500G.

The drives will start shipping to OEMs from mid-July for around $199.
