Google is reportedly in talks with Samsung to manufacture a component of its next-generation AI processor using Samsung’s 2-nanometer production technology, according to a report by The Information.
The chip in question, codenamed “Icefish,” is a tensor processing unit (TPU) co-designed with MediaTek, with TSMC expected to handle the main computing portion while Samsung may produce the component that bridges the chip to memory — an area where its 2nm process could prove critical. Mass production of “Icefish” is expected as early as 2028.
For Samsung, the contract would be a meaningful addition to its foundry portfolio at a time when the company is actively courting new customers for its advanced nodes. Samsung said in April it expects to expand its customer base for 2nm chips and is weighing a second fabrication facility in Texas. The process previously helped Samsung secure a $16.5 billion chip manufacturing deal with Tesla in July 2025.
