Samsung develops camera sensor that can capture image and depth information

March 1, 2012 By kunal Leave a Comment

Samsung unveiled a new camera sensor that can capture normal RGB and range images at the same time. The sensor developed by Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) combines the depth-sensing z-pixels with RGB into one, allowing the device to record light and depth information simultaneously.

Depth information is used to detect motion gestures and with the new sensor, Samsung can integrate it in smaller devices like phones or digital cameras.

The sensor currently can record RGB images at 1920×720 (1.38MP) and depth images are created at a resolution of 480×360 pixels.
