Samsung heir freed from prison after successful appeal

In an interesting turn of events, South Korean court today suspended jail term of Samsung Group’s heir and Samsung Electronics vice chairman, JY Lee (Lee Jae-yong). Lee had appealed the sentence, after which the court decided to reduce the sentence to 2.5 years and probation of four years.

Lee’s arrest last year had major ramifications that even brought down the president at the time, GH Park. Lee was arrested on account of corruption but did not plead guilty.

JY Lee is the son of KH Lee and the de facto leader after his father suffered a major heart attack in 2014 and has been in a vegetative state since then.
