Samsung confirms Galaxy Player, will showcase at CES 2011

Samsung Galaxy Player

UPDATE: Front facing camera is VGA. Will come in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB storage capacities.

Samsung has announced a new Android-based Galaxy Player that will be showcased next week at the CES 2011. Samsung says the new music player takes inspiration from its successful Galaxy S phone and is spec’d similarly sans the cellular connectivity.

The 9.9mm thick Galaxy Player (YP-GB1) runs on Android 2.2 Froyo OS and features a 1GHz CPU, 4-inch Super Clear LCD screen supporting up to WVGA resolution (800×480), T-DMB, SoundAlive audio enhancing technology, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, 3.2MP rear camera with front facing camera for video calling, GPS, HD video playback, microSD card slot, Android Market and Samsung Apps access and a 1200mAh removable battery.

Samsung is also expected to show other Android PMPs like YP-G50 and hopefully the recently certified YP-GB70.

All these rounded-cornered rectangle devices (iPhone, iPod touch, Samsung Galaxy S etc.) are extremely ugly.

    Samsung Wave is beautiful :)

  • Zeng Peets

    Wow, most impressive indeed. Wow.

    Looks like the ipod touch!

I wonder how it will perform

    • Anonymous

It performs rather well, with no lag most of the time.

Sometimes, if there are 20 processes going on at the same time, it will lag a bit scrolling through menus.

    My two biggest questions:

    1. What’s the price on this thing since it won’t be subsidized by the carriers?

    2. How do you get music on it? It would be nice if our worked with unlimited music services like Napster.

    • Anonymous

You plug it in via USB, then you copy the mp3 files over. Like a flash drive :)

The price will be comparable to the ipod touch

You get music on it the same way you would any other media player, plug it into your computer and download, or via wifi

    use common sense

It can tune wireless TV Broadcasting in South Korea….even in subway stations
    I think that’s huge…
US should set up the DMB system.

  • http://www.webguide4u.com Vivek Parmar

will it be avilable in old samsung galaxy phones??

  • Titanium

Samsung is trying every OS on earth but the best. Samsung should go with Meego not waste time with android, bada, wp7.

  • David Hibbs

Will it have HD FM radio? Keep me informed of updates

  • TuxDotKing

1.) Is MeeGo even finished yet?
2.) Meh, it’s nice but it doesn’t touch Android realistically. It would have been nice if Android had used more ‘conventional Linux’ libraries and toolkits; but it seems to be doing just fine without them.
3.)I agree with not wasting time with WP7. ;)

  • buddy boy

Can it dock to a ipod dock music player?

  • Superandroid

Samsung is exactly knows what it does:)
The only thing- i’d refresh Samsung logo.
With Media Hub and coming soon cloud Google Music, it will be a true warrior.

  • John

Yeah, well… will it have the same GPS problems like the other Galaxy S phones (like long time to lock on to satellites and inaccurate fixes) and will it randomly power off on its own like the Samsung Captivate? The problem is so bad that there is an app on the Android marketplace called “Captivate Keep Alive” just to keep the phone on and operating…..

Samsung, why don’t you fix the existing phones first before knocking out a knock-out of the iPod Touch? I own the Captivate phone and have been disappointed with the problems. You don’t have a fix for it yet. And why aren’t you providing an official 2.2 upgrade for the existing phones?

  • http://total-seo.blogspot.com/ Omer

    Looks good..

  • androidfan

Why do they have to make it almost exactly like a IPod knock-off?

Should have made it distinctively different to prove its better, instead of copying; and proving the IPod is good.

  • swat

finally, true competitor to the ipod touch!
seems like samsung learned a lot from apple.

  • http://gadgetinbox.com GadgetInbox

not bad, but I prefer the Samsung Galaxy Tab :D

  • OrigamiAttack

Fewer features than an iPod Touch, worse screen than an iPod Touch, and it probably won’t work with Macs and iTunes.

And it will likely cost $100-200 more than an iPod Touch, if the Samsung Galaxy Tab is anything to go by.

This is a pretty lousy way to go about making an iPod Touch killer. Good luck to them.

  • exo

Will it come out in Singapore?

  • http://gnuosphere.wordpress.com Peter

OrigamiAttack: “it probably won’t work with Macs and iTunes”

Devices don’t work with iTunes because iTunes itself is a closed system. Wise consumers will avoid iTunes altogether. When one buys a media player, one shouldn’t have to buy a device approved to work with a particular music store or particular operating system.

What an ipod touch ripoff. That’s what it is, it’s a blatant, barefaced ripoff. Samsung should be ashamed for stooping to the level of chinese device cloners.

@Peter – iTunes will work with any software that cares to integrate. A copy of your library is stored as XML and anyone can make an app that reads info from this library.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
Additionally, you can make an MP3 player that works with iTunes. Here are a handful of non-Apple MP3 players that work with iTunes:

    @OrigamiAttack

Well… It will have GPS, 3.2MP Cam, a MicroSD Slot and a changeble battery. I have an iPod Touch, and it doesnt have these things.

And well, Itunes is a shitty system if you don’t have a Mac.

  • bham4ever

    I ..like..It.
And GPS which the iPod does not.
I bet it will come in under the price of an iPod.
    Android Marketplace..is =Yes.
And with Skype mobile you can make calls..kool!

Peter: “When one buys a media player, one shouldn’t have to buy a device approved to work with a particular music store or particular operating system.”

I don’t care about Apple’s music store. I get my MP3s from all over the place and they work fine on my iPhone. I just want to sync my phone of choice with my computer of choice, and I can’t do that with Android.

    • Anonymous

You can. Galaxy devices have an optional service (I forgot what it was called) which works like iTunes.

Heck, you can even use Windows Media Player to sync it, or any file syncing program.

I just hope it comes in white to make it stand out among the iPods. I want it to be unique. I’m not worried about the look alike skin on it, that can be changed.

Cowon is also making something like this. And the android market can be installed on pretty much any device, whether it’s preinstalled or not. You can do it with Archos and you can sure as heck do it with this.

And another thing… People should learn to look at the media capabilities before the half baked games and software found in apps. They’re nice, but if this thing has the 800 by 480 resolution and an android interface, I’m sold.

    • Anonymous

It comes in white, but only the back of it is white. The front panel is black. Looks pretty nice.

I for one am very interested in this as I have been looking for an ipod alternative. The iTouch screen is too small for most browsing, ereaders, and widescreen movies. No expansion which means I’d have to shell out for 32gb model and iTunes is a bloated nightmare.
I do have to admit I’m intrigued by the potential interaction between the iTouch and Apple TV, and the possibility of Apple TV getting App support, which is why I was considering the iTouch in the first place.
This player is supposed to have full Google support (Marketplace, Gmail, etc.), a way better camera (.7 megapixel iTouch? Really?) and GPS. My only concern is price. If the 8gb model can’t come in around or under $250 USD, then it’s probably a no-go for me.

  • joe

for ALL who says its not better/its a itouch clone/ it has less features your wrong samsung running on android os is virtually unstoppable. android market has over 200k apps and almost half are free, plus i tunes is only for apple products, but for this you can just plug up your device to your computer and add it manually it also features a fm radio built in,a removable battery and micro sd slot two things apple doesn’t have on itouch it DOES work on Macs and it will cost around the same as any other itouch competitor (around $200-260) its gps will be fine under the new froyo firmware, and the screen is as standard as any other regular

  • Hemal

This will be priced around 250-300USD. Will rock as has HD recording feature and video calling

  • Gideon Tomlinson

Don’t really understand the fuzz going one about comparing iPhones and Android devices… It’s like people don’t really look at the new devices anymore… they don’t like tech… just like to justify why they spent a fortune in their iPhone…

FM radio is awful, not sure wny anyone would want to listen to the commerical drivel that spews from it.

there are a ton of decent radio apps on the marketplace and you will be able to listen to anything you want when near a wifi hotspot.

when you aren’t near a hotspot then listen to the podcasts/music/books/etc. on the device…

The Ipod is coolest, than this rip-off

it’s so horrible look how samsung copies apple

    Ipad – Galaxy tab
    Iphone – GalaxyS
    Ipod touch – this shit..

Now what?? Galaxy Nano, Galaxy Shuffle??

I were more excited if they created another line of devices

  • Raza Md

carl zune i just want to say: Ipod with Android is too much cool as compared to Apple.. With also 4 inches screen tooooo much koooool

  • ore

I find this to end in a disaster. What distinguishes the ipod and zune from other competitors is how much music backing it has. Ipod has itunes and zune has the zune software. The Android music player is extremely dull. Itunes is impossible to topple down and zune has such good music support. This samsung media device will not be able to even be able to touch the market. Overused OS with absolutely no internal music service and also lack of a aesthetically pleasing music player.
