Samsung introduces 2.5-inch 640GB HDD for notebooks

Samsung will be adding a new storage capacity option to its Spinpoint M7 series. The 640GB HDD in a 2.5-inch form factor will boast an areal density of 516Gb (Gigabit) per square inch per platter, which is a 28 percent increase over Samsung’s 500GB M7 HDD.

With the increase in areal density, the need for adding extra platter is eliminated, thus increasing storage capacity and stability while reducing mechanical parts and power consumption.

The 5400RPM Spinpoint M7 supports 3Gbps SATA interface, 8MB cache memory and is equipped with SilentSeek and NoiseGuard to reduce noise levels and shock resistance of 400G and 900G under operation or powered off mode respectively.

Samsung will ship the drive in Europe and US starting mid-September for $150 while rest of the markets will get from late September.
