Samsung Electronics today revealed in a regulatory filing that they may spin off its loss-making LCD business. Although nothing has been decided yet, the move, if happens, will be a result of the losses incurred due slump in LCD demand and increased competition from Chinese manufacturers.
Samsung Electronics was considering to take over Samsung Mobile Display but with the recent filing, analysts speculate that the LCD business will be transferred to SMD and Electronics division receive a decent chunk of SMD shares.
SMD enjoys a near monopolistic position of OLED displays which are used in smartphones, tablets etc.
