South Korean Food and Drug Safety Ministry confirmed today that Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S5 phone won’t be classified as a medical device. The Galaxy S5 sports a heart rate sensor at the back and despite the Korean law stating that any device used to “diagnose, treat or prevent diseases” should be first approved by the ministry, Galaxy S5 will be excluded from the categorisation after an amendment to the law, which according to an official should take about 25 days.
The amended law will be in line with the law in United States, Japan and Britain that distinguishes heart rate sensors used for medical or leisure purposes.
Samsung is expected to release the Galaxy S5 on April 11.
