Samsung Electronics and Globalfoundaries have teamed up to deliver global capacity for 14 nanometer (nm) FinFET process technology. With this partnership, customers will be able to design the 14nm chip and procure it from multiple sources, thus ensuring an abundant supply. The collaboration will take advantage of Samsung and Globalfoundaries’ fabs in Hwaseong (South Korea), Austin (Texas) and in Saratoga (New York).
Globalfoundaries has licensed the 14nm FinFET process from Samsung that overcomes the limitations posed by 20nm planar technology. Compared to the 20nm, the 14nm FinFET chip promises up to 20 percent higher speed while at the same time consume 35 percent less power.
The mass production of the 14nm FinFET technology is expected by the end of this year but interested customers can have the process design kits (PDKs) now.
