Reuters: Samsung produces Apple A5 chip in Texas

December 16, 2011 By kunal Leave a Comment

Samsung’s semiconductor plant in Austin, Texas recently reached its targeted capacity of 40,000 wafer per month and it seems a sizeable chunk of the chips produced goes to Apple.

According to a report by Reuters, Samsung’s 1.6m sq. ft plant produces Apple’s A5 processor used in the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. The A5 processor is designed by Apple and produced by Samsung and is one of the few components that is now sourced from within the United States.

Although both Apple and Samsung have declined to comment, Samsung’s statement “to meet its leading customers’ product requirements and expectations” somewhat confirms it.
