Samsung has had a less than stellar financial quarter and to add to their woes, market research companies like Counterpoint and Canalys claim that Samsung is losing its grip in the smartphone market in the world’s two largest telecom markets.
Counterpoint Technology, a market research company in Hong Kong says Micromax has surpassed as the largest smartphone brand in India, garnering about 17 percent of market share compared to Samsung’s 14 percent for the second quarter of 2014.
Meanwhile in the world’s largest telecom market, Canalys analyst claims Xiaomi has overtaken Samsung in China by shipping close to 15 million units with a 14 percent share compared to Samsung’s 12 percent with 13.2 million handsets.
The biggest take away from this is Samsung is taking a hit in the lower end of the market. Micromax is known for its cheap pricing while Xiaomi has taken the market with its top-notch hardware at minimum profit margin.
Samsung recently announced three sub-10k phones in India but we feel they have a lot to do if they want to take on the Chinese and the Indian brands.
