UPDATE: Samsung has confirmed the pricing of Gear S2 and Gear S2 classic for Finland and Denmark. Both countries will get the smartwatches in October at a price of 349 euros (Gear S2) and 399 euros (Gear S2 classic) in Finland whereas 2,599kr (Gear S2) and 2,999kr (Gear S2 classic) in Denmark.
UPDATE 2: Samsung has confirmed the Gear S2 will work with any Android device running Android 4.4 and above with 1.5GB+ RAM.
Samsung has shed more details on its upcoming smartwatch after the company confirmed its existence at the Galaxy Note 5 / Galaxy S6 edge+ launch last month.
The Gear S2 will come in two variants – the Gear S2 and the Gear S2 classic. Samsung says the Gear S2 classic is aimed at users who prefer a “more timeless watch design,” which comes in an elegant Black finish with a matching genuine leather band whereas the Gear S2 is ideal for those who are on-the-go and prefer a “minimal and modern design.”
The smartwatches still run on Samsung’s Tizen wearable platform, which if history is to go by, the smartwatches will work only with Samsung devices. We’re not sure if Samsung plans to extend compatibility with non-Samsung devices but would certainly propel the chances of it being one of the best smartwatches Samsung has to offer considering its good looks.
Nevertheless, the unique thing about the watches are the rotating bezel along with the Home and Back buttons, giving users am intuitive way to interact with the watch.
If we talk about the hardware features, the Gear S2 comes with a 1.2-inch circular Super AMOLED 360×360 display, 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB RAM, IP68 rated for water and dust resistance, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC for Samsung Pay, heart rate sensor and up to 3 days of battery life. The Gear S2 will also come with an eSIM support to “perform quick functions” without having it to be tethered to a phone. We’re not sure if this includes making or receiving phone calls as well.
Software-wise, Samsung promises more apps coinciding with the launch but features S Health, Nike+ Running, music player, maps and weather.
The Samsung Gear S2 will be available in a Dark Gray case with a Dark Gray band and Silver case with a White band. The Samsung Gear S2 classic will be available in a Black case with a Leather band.
Samsung will showcase the Gear S2 at IFA this week.
