Yesterday, Samsung announced a new series of rotation based HDDs which does not compromise on speed and keeps noise at minimum. The 3.5†SpinPoint S166 hard drives will come in 80GB and 160GB capacities and will be available from this month. SpinPoint drives generate noise of 24 decibels in idle state and 27.5 decibels when in use compared to its counterparts which produce 28 decibels and 32 decibels of noise respectively. The S166 disks uses three new technologies; fly-height control technology, an optimized actuator assembly and an upped system-on-chip (SoC) controller for better performance and reliability.
