Samsung has taken a direct shot to topple the conventional 15K RPM HDDs used in the servers. They announced a 2.5-inch 100GB SS805 SSD that can be used in servers for video on demand, streaming media content delivery, internet data centers, virtualization and on-line transaction processing.
These drives are ridiculously fast when compared to HDDs. The IOPS (input/output per second) is touted to be more than 10 times faster than the fastest 15K RPM HDD and attains a random read speed of 25K and write speed of 6K. It is even energy efficient, which consumes only 1.9 watts of power during active mode and 0.6 watts in idle mode.
The Samsung drives also come with data encryption and feature to store processing data during an event of a power outage.
It will reach the market this quarter.
