Samsung develops SATA based mini-card SSD

Samsung SATA mini-card SSD

Samsung is now sampling a new breed of SSDs that could help bolster the adoption of SSDs in netbooks. The new SSDs feature a mini-PCI Express (PCIe) form factor supporting SATA 3.0GB/s interface and easily fits into the small chassis of netbooks making it work as a primary storage. It also works as a complementary drive to add more storage in computers supporting more than one drive.

The drive is really small which measures 3.75mm thick, 30mm wide and 51mm high, making it 80 percent smaller than a conventional 2.5-inch HDD. It is super light too with weight of less than 10 grams (8.5g to be exact).

Samsung is working with JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) to standardize the new form factor and the pin layout and is expected to be done in as early as third quarter.

The mini-card SSDs will be available in capacities of 16/32/64GB and boasts a read/write rate of 200/100 MB/s respectively.
