5MP module

Samsung today announced that they’ve developed couple of CMOS image sensors meant for smart and slim handset models.

The S5K4E2 CMOS Image Sensor is a 1/4-inch, 1.4-micron 5MP chip that uses Samsung Enhanced Energy Steering (SEES) technology along with extended depth of field (EdoF) that helps to take clear pictures. With the help of SEES and EdoF, the sensor is able to capture more light into an optimized pixel structure and take pictures at distance ranging from 15cm to infinity at decent quality. The 6.5mmx6.5mm module is just 4.5mm tall making it an optimum choice for phones with a slim chassis.

On the other hand, the S5K5CA is more of a complete solution that integrates both the image signal processor and CMOS sensor. The 1/5-inch, 1.4 micron SoC supports 3MP resolution and is touted to be 25 percent smaller than its previous 3MP imager. In addition to the small size, the newer SoC supports 720p video recording and a 10 percent improvement in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

The S5K4E2 CMOS Image Sensor is expected to reach the assembly line in Q1 2010 while S5K5CA is already in volume production.

PS: Not an actual picture of the aforementioned modules.
