A female employee named Ji-yeon Park who worked in Samsung’s semiconductor plant recently passed away on March 31. Park, 23 was diagnosed with leukemia — a blood related cancer – and as per Banollim a civic group that promotes health and rights of semiconductor company workers, Park died because she was exposed to radioactive rays and benzene in the factory.
Samsung has denied the allegation and has invited journalists to tour the plant and examine the working conditions by themselves.
“There has been a misunderstanding about the conditions of the semiconductor manufacturing process. Speculation related to leukemia and erroneous stories about working conditions have been widely circulating, so we are going to show how (the assembly line) is being managed,” company spokesman Kim Choon-gon said.
Banollim further alleges that over the past 10 years, 23 employees working in the Samsung facility have contracted some sort of blood-related disease and at least 9 have died.
