Samsung has published its first quarter result for the quarter ending March 31 2010. The figures were recorded as per International Financial Reporting Standards and Samsung has posted a consolidated revenues of 34.64 trillion won, a 21 percent year-on-year (YoY) increase with the net profit of 3.99 trillion won and consolidated operating profit at 4.41 trillion won.
Samsung says this quarter’s strong result was mainly due to improvements in the components business and good demand in other businesses.
The Semiconductor business recorded a consolidated operating profit of 1.96 trillion won with revenue of 8.20 trillion won. Samsung was able to achieve profitability due to the adoption of 40nm-class process for DRAM and expanding 30nm-class process in the NAND market.
Samsung expects to see steady demand for DRAM and NAND in the second quarter due to increasing demand of mobile devices like tablet PCs.
Its LCD business recorded an operating profit of 490 billion won on revenue of 6.85 trillion won. Samsung expects the demand to remain stable in the next quarter and will continue to spend in LED, 3D, 240Hz TV panels.
Samsung’s Mobile business outperformed again and recorded an operating profit of 1.10 trillion won on revenue of 9.18 trillion won. Samsung shifted a total of 64.3m units with strong demand from India and other CIS countries.
Samsung has confirmed to launch “strategic smartphones” in the coming quarter based on Android and bada platforms.
Finally, the Digital Media business that includes home appliances and TVs. The business posted revenue of 12.61 trillion won and an operating profit of 520 billion won.
