Samsung today introduced Epic, its first 4G device that will run on Sprint and since Sprint has another power packed 4G device, HTC Evo in its arsenal, it would make an interesting comparison when you compare it spec-to-spec.
Evo retails for $199 and though the Epic’s price is not yet confirmed, we expect to be in the same range.
Think we missed out something? Let us know in the comments.

Samsung Epic 4G Bluetooth 3.0
kunal says
@Din: I checked with Samsung. Epic 4G has Bluetooth 2.1.
Spyroscesarsc says
Surely, it is the best smartphone of season 2010-2011! Also, in new photos it looks very slim and beautiful. I wish i find the money to buy it. ๐ Just the best! Hope that its beginning price won’t be over 600 euros.
AMora says
Good job!
Epic’s 5-row qwerty keyboard is so useful
Kron says
A tie… until you realize that Hummingbird is a masterpiece of engineering. Samsung contracted w/ Intrinsity to design the complicated & revolutionary Domino Logic while doing the tape out of the chips on the SoC substrate. Using their own fabrication process with TAPE technology (insulator). But this SoC includes not only A8 arm cortex core, but more importantly the SGX540 GPU capable of 90million triangles per second (3x iPhone 3GS). It is this coupled with ultra fast Domino Logic that gives the multi-core SoC processor the ability to be clocked even higher. The sweet spot is 1ghz, but when they put it into their Samsung TAPE Tablet w/ passive cooling it can be clocked as high as 1.5ghz w/ ease. The first TAPE Tablet PC will be clocked at 1.2ghz w/7″ screen!
Add all the goodies like DLNA Wifi server, Sixaxis Gyro, Layar (augmented reality for Google maps), GPS function, 4G, keyboard, etc and you have the first real iPhone 4 & iPad KILLERS. Apple better start getting the body bags ready when these comes out. Mainly because it’s basically a better iPhone with the same parts all made by Samsung. Apple should really call it the Samsung iPhone 4 for Apple! lol… Only has a funky flawed antenna design. That’s as obvious as Apple telling you “here hold these two wires as we switch the power on”! haha… even dumb blondes are smart enough to design the antenna to be inside the case! ๐ Epic will Reign supreme even over the Galaxy S!
….and Super AMOLED is the king screen in Sunshine!!!
James Kang says
@ Spyroscesarsc, but there will be the Android 3.0 coming late this year.. is that true? so I’ll postpone for buying new Android phone..
Kron says
@Spyroscesarsc Absolutely the best choice. People don’t realize Touch Screens may be new, but do they really fully replace a real keyboard? NO! In some ways they are still a novelty, get in the way of viewing & utilizing the full screen and all of them smudge up in no time. Samsung has put both in this unit and packaged it brilliantly to be not much bigger a phone w/o a physical keyboard. Which was the whole problem touch screens were trying to avoid. With this phone if you don’t like it, so what! …it’s like having a spare tire and full tank of gas in your car, it’s nice to know you have it to use. Unless of coarse your only trying to keep up with the Jones kind of Arrogance of not having it which is just so ignorantly foolish! I’ll pre order this phone even though they don’t have 4G where I live yet!
Khaled riyadh says
I’d prefer Samsung Galaxy S over Samsung Epic.. But Evo 4 over both ๐
Kron says
That’s cool Khaled… but there are many things missing with the Evo that the Epic has. #1 you don’t have to use the physical keyboard, but it’s nice to have especially for some games. The other thing is that Epic is no thicker for having it. But the main thing you’ll miss is Super AMOLED Screen and the SGX540 GPU that does 3x the speed of graphics. Look up Quake3 comparison of between Evo and Galaxy!
Another thing is the Broadcom Combo Radio and better baseband radio. This Broadcom’s power tripple function GPS/WiFi Direct ( device to device w/o router) and BlueTooth 3.0 capable of greater than 10x WiFi speeds at 6ft. DLNA has hardware support built in for Galaxy/Epic. Meaning greater speeds for video and gaming via WiFi Direct or PS3 or Xbox360 to HDTV!
I could go on….. but it’ll be your decision you have to live with. Just saying get all the facts you can first! ๐
Kish says
I like both phones, but EVO is out of stock everywhere, so I’m gonna hold off for the Samsung EPIC. Just appears to be more useful for someone in the corporate world, especially with the pullout keyboard.
ATLGA says
Does anyone know when this phone will becoming out?
Kron says
@ATLGA Most likely middle to late August if not September. Sprint wants to be ready this time without having supply issues of Evo 4G. They want plenty of stock on hand and this Epic is more design modifications in it. Plus they want it to release with Android 2.2 installed.
It was going to come out the end of July. But that’s doubtful now. Samsung is low on Super AMOLED’s as well as AMOLED’s for other phones and they won’t have their new fabrication plant coming on line till late next year!
It’ll be worth the wait though. That’s the one I’m waiting for too! ๐
GameOnSamsung says
SAMOLED w/ SGX540 GPU DLNA GRAPHICS Note: All Action Graphics, Games, etc in the future are going to look far better on Super AMOLED Galaxy/Wave than iPhone or any other LCD or AMOLED Screen. Because of the super fast 0.01ms response time and 100,000:1 contrast ratio. The fact is NO IPS LCD (or standard AMOLED) has a chance in hell of competing with it. iPhone4 Retina IPS’s abysmal 25ms is more like the first junk desktop LCD screens in speed. Fast action Games & Video will ghost and display like crap. Especially since the Galaxy has been designed for the future w/ that 3x the display capability of iPhones SGX535 GPU with it’s SGX540 GPU at 90million Triangles/per/sec rendering speeds.
***Which is the reason it can put up HD 720p graphics over WiFi Direct DLNA or BlueTooth 3.0 DLNA to your HDTV. This is the reason they did not bother putting in an HDMI out port. Also because HDMI restricts graphics w/ HDCP. DLNA doesn’t restrict anything being a wireless broadcast in the first place and being both Wifi 2.4ghz and 5.0ghz (unlike iPhone4, etc’s 2.4ghz ONLY)!
***My plan is to buy either the DirectTV Google Box or the Logitech GoogleTV Box. They are going to be WiFi Direct (I believe dual band as well). Along with Bluetooth 3.0 DLNA capable. This feature can auto Sync and because of it’s extremely fast speed (faster than Wifi G or N) and low 6 to 30ft range it will not conflict with any other signals. Bluetooth 3.0 DLNA is the FUTURE!
btw.. some specs in this story are wrong. Galaxy/Wave have newest Wifi b/g/n Direct (device to device)/DLNA over Dual 2.4ghz & 5.0ghz signals, Bluetooth 3.0 10x speeds of iPhone4’s BT 2.1 and they have FM Transceivers for sending music car or home stereo with baseband radio sleep mode for longer mp3 music play time!
Naz says
Does anyone know if the Epic is also capable of phone to tv output as the Evo is with it’s HDMI output? And also if the Epic is able to provide internet service to other computers like the Evo does (up to 8 devices).
GameOnSamsung says
@Naz All Samsung Galaxy devices have have the hardware and support DLNA. With the 2.2 Froyo update will come full OS support as well. But the Broadcom 20751 combo SoC has the instruction sets embedded in it to support it full DLNA Wifi b/g/n Direct (device to device w/o the need for a router.
Stick that in your ear CrApple! ๐ ….they don’t even have the Bluetooth 3.0 or FM Transceiver because their phone was designed like a Mexican Rolex to only look like it was a phone! haha….
Yvette says
I am on the waiting list for the Evo and just rec’d an e-mail from Sprint re: the Epic. Was wondering with the Epic does it have the feature where you can talk and then hit send and it texts the message?
Kish says
@Yvette. I found this which is what you might be looking for:
http://www.google.com/mobile/voice-actions/index.html
It’s for any android with Froyo on it. Hope it helps!
Kish says
Oh yeah…one more difference to consider between the EVO and Epic. The EVO is $199 and the Epic is $249.
Grrrrrrrrrrr. :-/
GameOnSamsung says
@Yvette Grab the Epic it’s a much better phone with better features all the way around. $50 more for what you get is not worth fretting over. I’m buying this simply because it’s packed with more NEXT GENERATION TECHNOLOGY than any other phone on the market! …..that’s besides the Super AMOLED Screen, Excellent Keyboard, DLNA Built in and of course 4G Speeds with the Cam Light and far better camera features. The Radios are FULL NEXT GEN STUFF. Dual band 2.4/5.0 Wifi Direct (phone to device w/o need of a router), next Gen BLueTooth 10x faster than iPhone4 and Evo’s Bluetooth 2.1. FM Transceiver (stream music to home or car stereo along with FM radio reception with traffic alerts) that will be fully enabled in Android 3.0. Standby time alone dwarfs all the competition. The Base Radio is the only out on any phone that fully supports Video Chat over 3G. That too is coming with Google’s GIBS Engine. You have TV Video Out via the headphone jack….. How cool is that that and what other phone has that? With DLNA 720 video out to HDTV or PC Direct, no one else has that either. They have DLNA, but no Direct to device or another phone w/o the hardware that’s in this Phone!!! Forget the Evo they are going to deliver it with crap LCD Screen!
In a year Evo will be just another phone but Epic will still have features to explore the boundaries of it’s super powerful SGX540 GPU that can run Desktop version of Quake 3 full speed where Evo, iPhone4 and every other phone out is stuck with last gen Graphics Display Power! Don’t be a lamer with has been technology out the door for a mere $50 Bucks. Be smart choose Epic and you won’t be sorry!!!

Hey
Someone please let me know if I can have android 2.2 on Epic. Thanks

@rocky: Yes, it will get Android 2.2.

Thanks Kunal

i hav an evo and my friend got his epic today, beautiful screen it has me beat. but DLNA the evo has as well no hardware needed jus go to android market and download Twonky Server and there you have it all the connection that GameOnSamsung mentioned….plus whatever google updates evo gets as well. My friend was told his Epic would ship with Froyo 2.2 wrong and he is mad as hell about it…found no timetable for that one. Evo on the other hand has Froyo now and me and him watched some Flash content on a few sites today @ work as if we had the laptop out or something…I mean with my kick stand out lol..”Look Ma No Hands” Both phones are great I can’t hate, their both in the android fam. me and my bud jus finished vid chating with each other cool rite? can go wrong with either jus a matter of what you want and comfy with…Me Virtual keys…My Bud physical qwerty and a brighter screen(he’s half blind by the way so he needs it) Happy Hunting peace……..
GameOnSamsung says
@supa seemore That was just an awesome comment and they are both great phones. Love the kickstand idea on Evo and Video Chatting with no hassles like iPwned4 over 3G/4G with other phones is awesome. Don’t try to tell that to an iNazi though, they’ll bite your head off! btw…. all AMOLED’s have far faster response times than iPhone4’s last century speed of 25ms. Epic is lightning 0.01ms and I believe even Evo is faster than your PC Gaming monitor at 1 to 2ms!
As far as 2.2 Froyo? …it’s coming, but in a matter of a few months you should both be moving to 3.0, which will carry the biggest improvements and features for Android to date!
Andy says
Will the Epic be upgradeable to the Android 3.0 when it is available? I want the Epic (though at least with the 2.2 version if it will be possible).. but I’ll take it as it is. I am getting it this weekend, but want to make sure that it could be upgraded as time comes, or should I just wait a bit longer?
