Samsung creates two CMOS image sensors with Back Side Illumination (BSI)

Samsung S5K4E5

Samsung has developed two CMOS imagers, S5K4E5 and S5K2N1 featuring Back Side Illumination (BSI). The S5K4E5 is targeted towards mobile devices, like smartphones whereas S5K2N1 is more suitable for a digital camera.

Integration of BSI ensures that users will be able to capture better pictures in low light scenarios. Samsung says the new imagers are 30 percent more effective in low light sensitivity and control crosstalk that improves color as well as optical performance.

The S5K4E5 is 1.4 micron 5 megapixel sensor that can not only capture still images but videos in full HD resolution at 60fps. The sensor is also fast that allows to capture the moment as soon as the user clicks the shutter button.

On the other hand, the S5K2N1 is a 14.6 megapixel imager that is developed by Samsung’s low-power 90 nanometer logic process and supports video recording at full HD resolution (60fps).

The 5MP S5K4E5 will be mass produced in Q4 2010 whereas the 14.6MP S5K2N1 will be sampled later this year with mass production slated in Q1 2011.
