Samsung develops 8 and 12MP imaging sensor with Backside Illumination (BSI)

8 megapixel S5K3H2 CMOS sensor

Samsung has developed two imaging sensors for smartphones and other high-end devices that will offer superior low-light performance. The S5K3H2 8 megapixel CMOS imager features Samsung’s advanced 1.4 micron (um) back side illuminated (BSI) pixel technology that will enable users to shoot better quality pictures in low-light conditions.

The new imager is touted to offer quality at par with point-and-shoot digital cameras and can record videos in full HD resolution (30fps), 720p video up to 60fps and VGA resolution up to 120fps for slow motion recording. Additionally, the sensor is power efficient enabling devices with improved battery life.

12 megapixel S5K3L1 CMOS sensor

The 12 megapixel imager (S5K3L1) on the other hand also boasts the BSI tech for better low-light photos but adds an optional RGB-white color filter array to reduce noise and make the image up to 30 percent brighter. This optional filter works in tandem with an additional logic chip that converts the RGB-white pattern to RGB Bayer. The image sensor also features an on-chip pixel correction feature that corrects image distortion by compensating color and luminance response variations.

On the video front, the imager is capable of recording full 1080p HD video at 60fps, 720p at 90fps and VGA resolution images at 120fps.

The 8 megapixel and 12 megapixel sensor will go into mass production in second and third quarter respectively but will be showcased at the Mobile World Congress next week.

A white pixel for luminance… that is a good idea, more DR.
