According to a report from Japanese Business Daily Nikkei, Samsung, NTT DOCOMO and other Japanese firms will come together to develop chips related to wireless communications. The consortium to develop baseband chips will be formed to decrease the reliance on Qualcomm that holds more than 80 percent of the market share.
NTT DOCOMO will pump in about 30 billion yen (~$390m) in the venture whereas Samsung will help in the development of the chip and procurement of the materials.
Fujitsu, NEC and Panasonic Mobile Communications will also supposedly join the group.
