Samsung’s announcement of the eight-core Exynos 5 Octa SoC might have impressed many but Qualcomm’s CEO Paul Jacobs is certainly unexcited. At an event in China, the CEO claimed Exynos 5 Octa’s use of eight cores is nothing more than a publicity stunt and though it is good from a marketing standpoint, many cores make it difficult to optimize the chip for mobile devices.
However, he did believe that the race for number of cores will be over in the future as companies will focus more to optimize the chip to render smooth images, better positioning, high-speed downloads etc.
While Samsung hasn’t exactly explained how the Exynos 5 Octa works, the SoC is confirmed to take advantage of ARM’s big.LITTLE technology and is fitted with four Cortex-A15 cores and four Cortex-A7 cores.
