The success of the original Galaxy Note proved two things – consumers are not reluctant of using a stylus and they’re certainly not intimidated by a 5-inch display in a smartphone. The proliferation of larger sized display spawned a whole new breed of smartphones and if you give a quick glance on the number of offerings available in the Indian market, there’s a lot of potential for phones with larger sized display phones, which is why Samsung wants to tap it with their mid-range offering – Galaxy Grand.
Samsung had a grand launch of the phone today in Mumbai and we played briefly with the device to get the hands-on feel of the device.
When Samsung announced the device last month, the main concern for the device was the meagre WVGA display resolution (800×480 pixels) with a large 5-inch display. However, after playing with it for some time, I would say the display is decent although I would’ve preferred Samsung to at least integrate a qHD display panel.
As far as the design goes, it goes without saying Samsung has yet again adopted the same curvy design found on the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II. Even the colour options are similar – blue and white.
On the software front, Multi-window is the highlight here that is found only in Samsung high-end devices. Multi-window works fine here but is again limited to a number of apps. Samsung has also brought other features found on top-tier devices like the new TouchWiz UI, S Voice, Smart Alert, Direct Call and Popup Play. Samsung is also bundling myServices app suite that consists of few other apps like myMovies, myMusic, myMobileTV, myStation, myReader and myEducation.
Samsung has priced it at Rs. 21,500 and is expected to be available from early February.
