Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition went on sale yesterday that runs on Google’s stock Android OS. And though the phone offers a ‘Nexus-like’ experience, the software updates won’t be handled by the Android maker. Instead, the updates will be rolled out by Samsung. As review by AnandTech points out, the kernel found on the device is by Samsung whereas Google offers the Android build.
The Galaxy S4 GPe’s (I9505G) source is also found on Samsung’s Open Source website.
However, this does not mean users will have to wait longer for new software updates. Hugo Barra during the Google’s I/O keynote (around 47:30) confirmed that the phone will “receive system updates promptly with every Android platform update,” which maybe few days/weeks late to Google’s Nexus devices but definitely faster than running with TouchWiz UI.
