Samsung Electronics and SK hynix have entered into a cross-licensing agreement to share their respective patents related to semiconductor. Yonhap News says the agreement is a result of a negotiation that took three years where Samsung holds 102,995 semiconductor patents while SK hynix has 21,422 patents to its name.
Although the duration, payment or royalty fees are unknown at the moment both companies agree that the cross-licensing will avoid unnecessary litigation and help the semiconductor industry with innovation.
Samsung and SK hynix are the top two chip makers in the world with Samsung having a market share of about 33.3 percent and 17.4 percent for SK hynix in Q1 2013.
