The jury in the US case back in August last year awarded Apple a sum of $1.05 billion in damages but judge Lucy Koh reduced the awarded damages by $450.5 million citing a miscalculation on part of the jury.
A retrial was ordered and a new jury has now given their decision – Samsung has to pay $290 million. The verdict is more than what Samsung was contesting (about $52 million) while Apple sought around $380 million in the retrial.
Samsung is understandably disappointed by the decision as they claim was “based on a patent that the US Patent and Trademark Office has recently deemed invalid”.
Both companies will now move towards appeal and post-trial motions.
