Samsung today confirmed to have started mass production of industry’s first 8 Gigabit (Gb) low power double data rate 4 (LPDDR4) mobile DRAM. The new mobile DRAM is based on Samsung’s 20nm process technology that enables twice the performance and density, thus allowing Samsung to create a 4 Gigabyte (GB) LPDDR4 package.
It is safe to assume Samsung will use this module in one of its upcoming flagship devices.
Performance-wise, this LPDDR4 RAM offers an I/O data rate of up to 3,200 megabits per second (Mbps), supports UHD video recording and playback and continuous shooting of high-resolution images with over 20 megapixels. The chip is also Samsung’s lowest power consuming chip for smartphones and tablets and saves up to 40 percent power compared to 4Gb LPDDR3 2GB RAM.
Samsung is currently offering 2GB and 3GB LPDDR4 packages and expects the 4GB LPDDR4 module in early 2015.
