Samsung has announced that they’ve started mass production of industry’s first ePoP memory for smartphones. ePoP short for (embedded package on package) memory is a single memory package that integrates a 3GB LPDDR3 DRAM, 32GB eMMC (internal storage) and a controller, enabling smartphone manufacturers to save essential physical real estate when designing a phone.
Samsung says the ePoP memory is more suited towards high-end smartphones, tablets and brings in performance comparable to the prevalent two-package solutions.
The 3GB LPDDR3 mobile DRAM inside the ePoP supports 64-bit I/O bandwidth and has an I/O data transfer rate of 1,866Mb/s. This solution also saves space up to 40 percent, taking just 225 square millimeters compared to two-package solution that takes up to 374.5 square millimeters.
Samsung is also offering a similar solution for wearable devices known as the wearable memory.
