Samsung today confirmed to have begun the mass production of its second-generation 14nm FinFET process. However, the announcement also carries a confirmation that Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 820 processors will be based on Samsung’s latest 14nm process.
The new process takes advantage of Low-Power Plus (LPP) that results in improvements in performance and at the same time improve the power efficiency of the chip. To put it in numbers, the new 14nm LPP process increases the speed by 15 percent and lowers the power consumption by 15 percent compared to the previous 14nm process that was used in Exynos 7 Octa.
Samsung expects its new chips will not only make it to mobile devices but to IoT devices as well, which will help them bolster their position in the semiconductor market.
Samsung’s Exynos 8 Octa will also use the same 14nm LLP process, which is safe to say, will find its way in Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S7 (or whatever they’ll call) smartphone.
