Samsung has announced that they have developed a new application processor (AP) targeted at wearable devices. The specialty of the Exynos 7 Dual 7270 AP is that it is the first wearable-specific AP to utilise 14nm FinFET process technology. This is the same tech that Samsung uses for some of its Exynos processors meant for mobile devices.
Samsung says the Exynos 7270 is powered by two Cortex-A53 cores and is power efficient by up to 20 percent compared to a similar AP based on 28nm. Moreover, the Samsung offering is equipped with Cat. 4 LTE that allows the wearable to connect to the cellular network and use it as a standalone device. The processor also comes with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM Radio support and location service solution.
Samsung does not say when can we expect the first product to be powered by this AP but interested manufacturers can avail a reference platform equipped with the AP, NFC and various other sensors.
