Samsung has announced the industry’s first mSATA (mini-SATA) SSD that offers a storage of up to 1TB. The mSATA SSD belongs to the 840 EVO family, which Samsung introduced earlier this year and promises to offer the same performance at a quarter of a size of a 2.5-inch SSD.
To achieve a high density, Samsung has grouped 16 128Gb NAND flash memory based on 10nm into four separate memory packages. The physical result is that the SSD is just 3.85 millimeters in thickness and 8.5 grams in weight.
If we go by the performance, the sequential read and write speed of the drive is rated at 540MB/s and 520MB/s respectively and random read/write IOPS at 98,000 and 90,000.
Another interesting part about the mSATA SSD is that it can be used in conjunction with another storage device like SSD or HDD, provided the computer has an mSATA socket.
Furthermore, the drive is equipped with Samsung Magician 4.3 software that offers up to 1000MB/s sequential read speed on RAPID mode, 256-bit AES keys and is compatible with Windows 8.
The 840 EVO mSATA SSD will be available globally from this month.
