Rumor: Samsung 9000 Series LED TVs by year-end in US

August 14, 2009 By kunal 2 Comments

8500 LED LCD TV

‘Industry sources’ have spilled the beans to Digitimes that Samsung is looking to launch its 9000 Series LED TVs in US by the end of this year. As with most of the rumors, this one too does not say on the probable features but the sources point out that it will feature “direct-type LED backlighting in an ultra-thin form factor.” And if there’s some truth to yesterday’s rumor, it can possibly have 480Hz refresh rates too.

Samsung’s LED TV range has reached at 8500 Series, which was unveiled two weeks back and will start retailing in September.

The TV does offer a 480Hz refresh rate, which enables it to create 3D images. In current 120Hz, even more so in 240Hz, TVs this is already partially done. When 120 or 240Hz refresh rates are enabled, you immediately get lost in the realism of the picture, which most LCD TVs limit to 60Hz. (This is also done with plasma TVs, only 300Hz is the base, then 600Hz and 1200Hz being more 3D/immersive.)
The only problem with this technology is that with the increase in hertz, comes an equal decrease in lifespan. If an LED has a 15 year lifespan at 60Hz (normal), at 120Hz it has only 7.5 years, at 240Hz merely 3.25y, and now at 480Hz, by my calculations, only 1.75 years. This TVs going to cost nearly $10,000; I hope that by then they get it to last more than 1 and 3/4 years!
