Exynos 5 Octa now supports heterogeneous multi-processing (HMP)? [Update: Confirmed]

Exynos 5Octa

UPDATE 2: We received the following statement from Samsung regarding implementation of HMP in individual Exynos 5 Octa chips.

The optimization of the HMP solution for Exynos products is expected in 4Q of this year. The information regarding set product development is cannot disclosed at the moment.

UPDATE: Samsung has confirmed that its Exynos 5 Octa will gain heterogeneous multi-processing (HMP). HMP will enable the SoC to use all physical cores at the same time, if needed. Samsung says the HMP solution will be available to “customers” in Q4 2013.

The teaser that Samsung sent about an Exynos ‘evolution’ last week seems to be solved. Those were the screen shots from the video below. The video is titled as OCTA-pella and apparently shows off the heterogeneous multi-processing (HMP) implementation. The original description managed to reflect the same, however, it was quickly edited removing any reference to the HMP. We’re not sure what’s going on but if HMP arrives to the Exynos 5 Octa range, it will indeed be good news for consumers.

Samsung’s only Exynos 5 Octa device on sale – Galaxy S4 utilises four cores at a time – Cortex-A7 for lighter tasks or Cortex-A15 for power demanding tasks but with HMP, the SoC will be able to take advantage of all the eight cores according to the need of the task.

Let’s hope Samsung will clear things up as soon as possible.

Thanks, Mike!
