Samsung’s Galaxy Note series seems to be in the news for all the wrong reasons off late. While the company is trying to deal with the Galaxy Note7 recall globally, news report emerging out of India says that Samsung’s Galaxy Note II has caught fire. To make matters worse, the phone caught fire in an airplane with 175 passengers onboard. Luckily, no one was hurt as the Galaxy Note II was placed in the overhead bin and the crew managed to control the situation after passengers alerted of the smell emanating from the overhead bin. Important thing to note here is that Galaxy Note II comes with a removable battery and considering the age of the phone, we wouldn’t be surprised if the user used a non-Samsung branded battery.
Nevertheless, in light of the incident, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) – India’s aviation authority – put a blanket ban on the use of the complete Galaxy Note series in an airplane.
Earlier this month, DGCA issued a directive banning the use or charge the Galaxy Note7 inside the airplane.
Meanwhile, Samsung India has confirmed that they’re investigating the matter.
We are aware of an incident involving one of our devices. At Samsung, customer safety is our highest priority. We are in touch with relevant authorities to gather more information, and are looking into the matter.
